Partly, with real caveats. Perceptual-cognitive training does improve anticipation and decision-making in athletes — that part is reasonably well supported. Whether it improves game performance is the contested question, and the honest answer today is that the transfer effect is real but smaller than the lab gains, and it depends heavily on how closely the training resembles the sport.

If you want the short version: sport-specific perceptual training has a defensible case. Generic brain games do not.

What the research actually found

Zhu and colleagues' 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis in Behavioral Sciences pooled 22 quantitative studies covering 45 effect sizes on perceptual-cognitive training in team sports. It found the training positively influenced elite athletes' anticipation and decision-making — and that the transfer effect on real-game performance was inferior to the improvement measured in laboratory performance.

Read that twice, because both halves matter. The effect exists. It also shrinks on the way to the field. Any vendor quoting only the first half is selling you something.

Separately, Mann and colleagues' 2007 meta-analysis established the underlying expert–novice differences: experts pick up perceptual cues earlier, use fewer and longer fixations, and respond faster and more accurately. That is what the training is aiming at.

What to be skeptical of

  • Guarantees of on-field transfer. Nobody can honestly promise this. The research is genuinely mixed.
  • Abstract drills sold as football training. Shapes on a screen are the weakest transfer case in the literature.
  • Improvement measured only inside the product. Getting better at the app is the expected outcome of practicing the app.
  • Claims with no citation. If a product references "studies" without naming them, the studies are decoration.
  • Testimonials as evidence. An improving 16-year-old is a confounded data point — he is also lifting, growing, and getting more reps.

What a reasonable bet looks like

If the training uses real football pictures, imposes real time pressure, adapts as the athlete improves, and measures him against his own baseline rather than a population average — that is the version of this with the best case behind it. It is still a bet. It is just an informed one.

The best test available to you

Measure a baseline. Train for six to eight weeks. Re-measure — and separately, ask the position coach whether anything changed on tape, without telling him what you are testing. That is a crude experiment, but it beats every marketing claim on the internet, including ours.
